Germany has so much to offer, the beautiful Black Forest, the crystal-clear lakes, the snow-capped mountains, the christmas markets and of course the Oktober Fest! Above all Germany has many villages and cities just waiting to be discovered.
I want to tell you about one of them.
Landshut!
Landshut is a town in Lower Bavaria, approx 60km north east of Munich (München). So for those Oktober Fest lovers, a great base! Landshut is situated along the River Isar with a population of around 60,000.
Landshut is one of Bavaria's most impressive towns and there are many places to visit and many attractions.
There are many cafes and restaurants in the Altstadt (old town) and Landshut is a popular destination for cyclists. You can cycle for miles along the Isar and München is a 5 hour cycle ride away.
In the Spring and Summer the Dult is held. Literally a party for 10 days, with rides for the kids and of course Beer is flowing in abundance.
At christmas time there is the romantic christmas market where you can buy last minute presents and enjoy Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and drink Glühwein (mulled wine). The christmas market being a popular meeting place for young and old.
Not to forget the Landshuter Hochzeit (Landshut Wedding), which takes place every 4 years. The next is in June/July 2021. Visitors world wide have experienced the Landshuter Hochzeit 1475. More than 2000 participants dressed in medieval costume bring a festival to life that took place in the Middle Ages. It was the wedding between Hedwig, the Polish King's daughter and Georg, the son of the Duke of Landshut.
It is a spectacular event, not to be missed, and takes place over a 4 week period. You can witness medieval dancing and music, enjoy good food and drink. Festive games are played and on the tournament, ground knights perform the jousting. If you would like to witness the wedding in all its glory, then I recommend booking a hotel now!
If you would like to get a flavour of this festival then go here to the
Landshuter Hochzeit Web Site!
Of course, in Landshut, you will be able to order all your favourite tasty German recipes. Visit the beer gardens in the summer, shop, cycle or simply relax and watch the world go by.
